London Hydro has an exciting opportunity for a passionate and progressive environmental professional to join our team as an Environmental Supervisor. This vacancy within the Health, Safety & Environment team offers the opportunity to lead and enhance the organization’s Environmental Management Program while making a meaningful impact on sustainability, compliance, and operational excellence. Reporting to the Manager, Health, Safety & Environment, the successful candidate will collaborate with teams across the organization to advance environmental initiatives, strengthen regulatory compliance, drive continuous improvement, and promote environmentally responsible practices that support a safer and more sustainable future for our employees, customers, and community.

What You Will Do

 

  • Team Supervision: Supervise and provide technical and administrative leadership to direct report(s).
  • Environmental Program Administration & Regulatory Compliance: Support the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the environmental program in alignment with corporate strategy, values, objectives, and regulatory requirements. Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Environmental Management System (EMS), including development and ongoing review of related policies, procedures and practices. Maintain knowledge of, and contribute to the adherence and compliance with, applicable provincial, federal and municipal environmental laws and regulations pertaining to the organization and its activities. Coordinate the maintenance of all required permits, approvals, and certificates. Maintain London Hydro’s Safety Data Sheet inventory and associated system, and contribute to the maintenance and compliance of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). Monitor environmental performance and compliance through regular inspections, risk assessments and audits and report the findings to the Manager of Health, Safety and Environment. Facilitate, monitor the performance of, and coordinate third-party environmental inspections and reporting (e.g. waste management, spill response, and air, water, and soil monitoring).  Collaborate with key stakeholders, including municipal partners, industry partners, environmental consultants, contractors and customers, to advance environmental initiatives (waste minimization, recycling, energy conservation, and greenhouse gas reduction)
  • Sustainability & Environmental Awareness: Provide program-based information, education, training and advice to employees and management to support program and regulatory compliance. Promote sustainable and environmentally responsible practices to employees through training, employee engagement, and ongoing communication. Contribute to the evaluation and recommendation of technology, systems, equipment, and process improvements designed to eliminate or minimize environmental impacts. 
  • Incident Response & Continuous Improvement: Investigate environmental incidents, in collaboration with the Manager of Health, Safety and Environment, including coordinating corrective actions such as remediation, internal and external reporting and process improvements. Provide site support and oversight of spill clean-up activities. Conduct root cause analyses and identify continuous improvement opportunities to enhance environmental performance and reduce risk. Contribute to the integration of environmental considerations into operational risk assessments, procedures and planning processes.
  • Data Analysis, Reporting & Administration: Support the development of environmental targets and track progress against established objectives. Maintain, analyze and interpret environmental data and performance indicators. Prepare EMS compliance and/or progress reports. Contribute to the planning of program budgets and forecasts, and assist with monitoring expenditures.
  • Safety: Participate in compliance-related audits overseen by the Health, Safety and Environment Department. Ensure personal and direct reports’ adherence to all Occupational Health & Safety Act rules and regulations, IHSA safety Rules, London Hydro Safe Work Practice, Environmental policies, and Health & Safety policies. Ensure all incidents, injuries, and hazards are reported and reviewed and that corrective actions are taken. Complete workplace audits, action items and follow-ups.

What You Will Bring

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree in an environmental-related program, preferred. 
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience in sustainable environmental programs.
  • Strong working knowledge of all applicable legislation, regulations and standards affecting environmental compliance (e.g. Environmental Protection Act, PCB Regulations, Environmental Compliance Approvals, RPRA, Transportation of
  • Dangerous Goods, Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc.).
  • Experience or training in environmental management system development, including experience conducting incident investigations and audits. 
  • Working knowledge of Ontario Energy Board (OEB) and Ministry of Energy guidelines is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and coach employees and ensure compliance with practices and regulations. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and collaborative cross-functional relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks in a high-volume environment.
  • Strong planning and coordination abilities.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements and priorities.
  • Position necessitates a high degree of tact, confidentiality, integrity, ability and initiative to work independently.
  • Proficient use of a personal computer utilizing Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite.  
  • Valid Driver’s License Class G.
