As Manager of Design Engineering, you will play a critical role in the design, implementation, and maintenance of our electrical distribution system, ensuring the highest standards of safety, reliability, and efficiency.
Reporting to the Director of Design Engineering, you will lead a team of professionals and contribute to the continued evolution of London Hydro’s electricity grid. Your expertise will be central to advancing modern engineering solutions and cutting-edge technologies. This vacancy offers a dynamic leadership role where your technical skills, strategic insight, and commitment to excellence will have a lasting impact.
What You Will Do
- Team Leadership: Manage and provide technical and administrative direction, coaching, and support to direct reports.
- Planning and Estimation: Approve plans and cost estimates for new installations, rebuilds and upgrades of the distribution system, in adherence with all applicable codes, standards, and regulations. Prepare programs and estimates of capital construction projects for the annual budget process. Perform studies and estimates and makes recommendations. Contribute to short and long-term planning and contribute to cross-functional teams working together to optimize the electrical distribution system.
- Stakeholder Coordination and Incident Analysis: Consult and liaise with engineers, developers, contractors, customers, and private entities with respect to projects, to negotiate easements and rights-of-way, to investigate claims, and to coordinate the Electrical Safety Authority audit process. Coordinate work with the City of London and other utilities. Approve access to joint use parties on our infrastructure. Perform root cause analysis, recommend corrective actions on failure/incident, and prepare equipment failure analysis and investigation reports.
- Project Management and Compliance: Manage projects and expenditures within approved budgets and inform internal departments of project progress and potential issues. Ensure compliance with CSA, ESA, and Ontario electrical distribution safety regulation. Keep abreast of new and emerging electric distribution system grid technologies with positive operation impacts, including smart grid technologies.
- Reporting, Standards & Records: Develop systems for maintaining records (e.g. depreciated and unsafe poles, leaking transformers, and developer residential credit applications.). Assist in the preparation of supporting documentation and rationale for rate applications and other regulatory filings. Liaise with Directors and VPs on the reporting to regulatory bodies such as the OEB and the ESA on matters pertaining to distribution system reliability, maintenance, and safety. Write reports on topics effecting the overall distribution system. Introduce, approve and maintain standards and specifications, perform engineering analyses, and determine solutions affecting the electric distribution system to properly serve new loads. Develop and implement new technologies, technical processes and procedures for engineering planning and construction and streamline existing process flows. Prepare letters, specifications and estimates regarding customer services.
- Safety and Others: Ensure personal and direct reports’ adherence to all Occupational Health & Safety Act rules and regulations, IHSA EUSR safety rules, London Hydro Safe Work Practices, Environmental Policies and Health and Safety policies. Wear all personal protective equipment as required. Ensure all accident reports are reviewed and corrective action taken. Complete workplace audits, action items and follow-ups. Perform other related to the above.
What You Will Bring

- Successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university plus intermediate course or Honours level degree.
- P.Eng. Designation and Registration with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (P.E.O.).
- Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in the electricity distribution industry.
- Strong leadership, management, and supervisory skills.
- Experience with distribution network reliability and power quality standards and reporting requirements
- Knowledge of high voltage distribution including substations, overhead and underground construction, commercial services, metering, protection and control, SCADA, network systems, etc.
- Knowledge of GIS systems.
- Knowledge of applicable standards and regulations, including ESA Reg 22:04, and common utility procedures and policies.
- Knowledge of utility-related construction practices.
- Ability to read technical drawings.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective cross-functional relationships at all levels of the organization.
- Strong analytical, organizational and time management skills.
- Advanced proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel. Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements and priorities.
- Professional and effective oral, written, presentation and interpersonal skills
- Valid Driver’s License Class G.
