In this hands-on role, you’ll work with advanced SCADA systems and intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), installing and maintaining remote communication networks and supporting leading-edge Distribution Automation technologies. From commissioning fault indicators and data concentrators to working safely around energized and high-voltage systems, you’ll play a critical role in keeping our power systems connected and reliable.

What You Will Do

  • Within the SCADA application environment, perform graphical and database editing, and routine maintenance to facilitate the connection and integrity of remote SCADA devices (I.E.D.s)
  • Fabricate, install, apply approved device configurations, commission, and conduct ongoing maintenance of remote communication devices on the SCADA System such as: RF Radios and peripherals, optical fiber, serial & ethernet devices, wireless devices, network switches and router, terminal servers, encryption appliances and media converters.
  • Contribute to the design and configuration, fabricate, install, apply approved device configurations, commission and conduct ongoing maintenance of Distribution Automation technology platforms installed on the Distribution System (e.g. I.E.D.s (RTU/relays/data concentrators/etc.), fault indicators, power quality devices, self-healing schemes, or similar devices).
  • Assist with instructing other departments in the proper usage of Distribution and Automation devices.
  • Maintain required paperwork, drawings, as-builts and files.
  • Accompany contractors performing installations and field work pertaining to P&C functions.  
  • Assist in training of new personnel.
  • Work on energized cable and/or equipment up to 750 volts.
  • Work in close proximity to high voltage cable and/or equipment.
  • Adhere to all Occupational Health & Safety Act rules and regulations, the IHSA’s EUS rulebook, and London Hydro work practices. Report all injuries and near misses immediately. Perform all activities in a manner that protects the health and safety of yourself and others. Wear personal protective equipment as required. Understand and comply with London Hydro Health and Safety policies.
  • Perform other duties related to the above job purpose.

What You Will Bring

  • Graduate of Community College in an Electrical Engineering Technologist program PLUS specialized trades training, or equivalent.
  • Driver's License Class G (a driver's license and an ability to drive is required in order to discharge the essential duties of the position).
  • MEARIE/Hydro One Protection & Control Technician Apprenticeship Certificate of Achievement
  • Ability to read, interpret and work with drawings, sketches, engineering design standards, design mark-ups, field notes, specifications and reports.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication (verbal and written) skills. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and appropriate software.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
